An exploit in the European and Australian eShop briefly allowed users to download the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity expansion pass for free.
For a brief period of time, the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity expansion pass was made free on the eShop due to an exploit. However, this glitch is no longer possible to pull off.
The expansion pass for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity includes two waves of DLC, the first of which is scheduled to release in June. The first wave will include one new playable character, new challenges, new enemies, and new weapon styles. The second wave will add more characters, and though the characters have yet to be officially confirmed, they have been revealed through Hyrule Warriors‘ datamine. Today, the purchase bonus for the expansion pass was made available, that being Link’s prototype ancient sword and ancient armor.
However, that purchase bonus was what led to the creation of this exploit. Nintendeal reported that on the European and Australian eShops, users could download the purchase bonus of the expansion pass individually, and this led players to be able to download the whole pass for free. This exploit didn’t work in any other country’s eShop. The glitch has since been patched up though, presumably due to the amount of exposure this exploit received upon its discovery. This exploit apparently also worked even if users didn’t have the game, so it could have been downloaded and then installed should they purchase the game later.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass might be FREE if you “purchase” the Purchase Bonus: https://t.co/xZum8a6KhM
Apparently if you grab the free download it rewards you with the entire Expansion Pass. I don’t think this works for US accounts, so I can’t test it. pic.twitter.com/CLhJlayVM7

When the original Hyrule Warriors released on the Wii U, there were also several purchasable DLC packs that included new characters and weapons from across the series. Though there wasn’t an exploit like this back when those DLC packs came out. More characters were added through the 3DS release of the game, Hyrule Warriors: Legends, which were also purchasable as their own DLC pack on the Wii U release. But all of the DLC packs were put into one game with Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition on the Nintendo Switch, which currently doesn’t have any purchasable DLC packs.
The fact that an oversight like this managed to slip through the cracks is hilarious, though it was obvious that it wasn’t going to last for long once it got well known. Those that managed to snag the expansion pass for themselves haven’t had it taken away or charged as of yet, and there’s currently no indication that those that did download it will suffer significant repercussions. So while it might have not lasted for long, those that managed to download Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity’s expansion pass before the exploit was patched can consider themselves lucky.
