Al Roker reunites with former colleagues during Cleveland taping

From 1978 to 1983, Al Roker worked at 3News in Cleveland.

CLEVELAND — Beginning Monday, NBC’s Today is kicking off its “Reopening America TODAY” series, highlighting what’s happening in various cities across the country with more people getting vaccinated for COVID-19.

One of the cities being featured is our very own, Cleveland! And for those of you who don’t know, our beloved city has strong ties to one of Today‘s current hosts–Al Roker.

From 1978 to 1983, Al Roker worked at 3News in Cleveland. So with his return to the city for taping last week, his former 3News colleagues were happy to welcome him back to the studio.

“I worked at WKYC Channel 3 for five years,” Roker said. “It is literally my second home. A lot of folks in Ohio think I’m from Cleveland. Proud to be an adopted son of Cleveland.”

Despite the inclement weather, Roker was able to reunite with his old pals–inside– for a safe and socially distanced trip down memory lane.

Take a look at his reunion with some of his former co-workers including Leon Bibb, Tom Beres, Lisa Lowry, Al Whol and more in the player above.

The news of Roker’s visit was revealed in a special announcement from Today hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb last week.

“All next week, we’re going big in Cleveland,” Guthrie said Tuesday morning. “Mr. Roker, who thinks he’s a hometown hero there – and I think he might be, actually – he’s going to kick things off with a special show Monday, May 10.”

Kotb also announced that Roker will be joined by special guest Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers for this special spotlight of our city.

“Al cannot stop talking about you guys,” Kotb told the 3News team. “He cannot wait. … He’s been talking about the restaurants, he’s been talking about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, all of it.”
