The situation began shortly after 3 a.m. Monday when police were called to a disturbance where a man was allegedly threatening people in the 900 block of East Ave.
ELYRIA, Ohio — A 37-year-old man was taken to the hospital after he was shot by an Elyria police officer during an incident early Monday morning.
The situation started shortly after 3 a.m. when the Elyria Police Department received a call regarding “a subject causing a disturbance and threatening people” in the 900 block of East Avenue. Upon their arrival, officers found a man matching the description walking in the area of Howe Street.
“During this encounter, an Elyria police officer fired his service weapon, striking the subject who was armed with a firearm,” police said in a press release.
The man, identified as Darnell Delaney, was given first aid at the scene before being taken to University Hospital Elyria Medical Center. He was later transported to the University Hospital main campus in Cleveland.
Police say Delaney is currently under adult parole supervision “for the offenses of attempted murder, escape, failure to comply and obstructing official business.”
In relation to this incident, police say Delaney has been charged with having weapons under disability and carrying a concealed weapon.
