Behind the Social Media Boycott Known as the “Stop Hate for Profit” Movement

On Tuesday, Sept. 15, Kim Kardashian took to Instagram with a strong message. “I like that I can join straight with you thru Instagram and Fb, however I can’t sit by and keep silent whereas these platforms proceed to permit the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation… solely to take steps after individuals are killed,” her caption learn. “Misinformation shared on social media has a critical affect on our elections and undermines our democracy.”

Many different celebs posted related messages, together with Olivia Wilde, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, and Natalie Portman. Per Cease Hate’s web site, it is an “ongoing marketing campaign to carry social media corporations accountable for hate on their platforms.”

Hundreds of companies joined the trigger and paused Fb advertisements in July 2020 when the social media web site was outed for spreading misinformation concerning the upcoming election, and operating racist and anti-Semitic advertisements that displayed messages of hate and bigotry.
