Brad Pitt, Adam Driver & Keanu Reeves Almost Cast As Kraven

Sonys Kraven The Hunter

Reports say prior to selecting Andrew Johnson-Taylor, Sony approached Keanu Reeves, Brad Pitt, as well as Adam Driver for the role of Kraven.

Sony purportedly approached Keanu Reeves, Brad Pitt, and Adam Driver for the lead role in the upcoming stand-alone Kraven the Hunter film. It was first announced in 2018 that Sony would be developing a stand-alone film for the one of Spider-Man’s most formidable adversaries. Kraven The Hunter is set to release on January 13th, 2023, and is part of Sony’s dive into the universe of supporting characters associated with Spider-Man. It will connect with and follow Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s 2021 release and Morbius’ 2022 release.

The announcement was, of course, met with much anticipation. In the comic books, Kraven is a skilled bounty hunter who sets his sight on the ultimate prize – the amazing Spider-Man – to prove himself as the world’s greatest hunter. Sony certainly made a splash with their decision to give him a stand-alone film, as rumors continue to swirl of Kraven’s potential MCU debut in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Sony started off strong nabbing Triple Frontier’s J.C. Chandor to direct the film. They then proceeded to drop a huge bombshell when they announced Aaron Taylor-Johnson would portray Kraven. However, the road to selecting Kraven’s actor was not a linear path.

Justin Kroll, who reported on Taylor-Johnson’s selection, revealed that Sony had also approached Reeves, Pitt, Driver, and JDW (presumably John David Washington) for the role of Kraven. As with many film adaptions of hugely popular comic book characters and stories, choosing the right actor can make or break it. Naturally, Sony aimed high, sifting through Hollywood’s A-list of actors. However, reportedly, they caught wind of Taylor-Johnson’s work in an upcoming film and were so impressed that they made quick work of offering him the role of Kraven. Check out Kroll’s post below:

While some of the names are surprising, others are not so much. Back in February, inside sources had claimed that Reeves was offered the Kraven role, as well as Star Wars’ Driver. Sources suggested that both had declined the role, though neither have publicly addressed it. Pitt and JDW, meanwhile, had not largely been linked to the role. However, neither would be surprising considering Pitt’s versatility, credibility, and the way he shines in action films, while JDW truly delivered as the protagonist of the sci-fi action thriller, Tenet. It is also interesting that Kroll mentioned it was Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming film Bullet Train that caught their attention – a film in which Pitt claims the lead role. Perhaps Pitt inadvertently led Sony to Taylor-Johnson?

Regardless of how Sony became acquainted with Taylor-Johnson, it is quite impressive that he has risen above a stunning list of Hollywood’s top actors to claim the Kraven role. He is most recognizable to fans for his role in Kick-Ass and for portraying Quicksilver in the MCU. However, our curiosity is definitely peaked for Bullet Train and Kraven the Hunter, to witness what so impressed Sony. Also, the news that Sony scanned such big names in Hollywood suggests that their Spider-Man villain universe is truly gaining traction. This is even more exciting considering Sony’s recent Spider-Man deal with Marvel Studios, that could see the two universes cross-over. If Sony keeps growing their universe and nabbing top-notch actors and directors, we could see two huge film franchises clashing for an epic cross-over in the future.
