In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Ewan McGregor addressed a lightsaber battle he had with Oasis lead singer Noel Gallagher.
In an interview on the set of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Ewan McGregor addressed a bizarre lightsaber training story with Noel Gallagher. Announced in 2019, Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of many anticipated live-action series Disney+ has lined up to air after season 2 of The Mandolorian ended in December of last year. Though much of The Mandolorian has been well received, its controversial season 2 ending left many wondering about the future of the show. In the meantime, fans are looking forward to The Book Of Boba Fett, Andor, and Ahsoka.
The most anticipated of the bunch is Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will see McGregor reprise his iconic role as the titular Jedi master. While Disney has been mum regarding plot details, it is known the series is set 10 years after Chancellor Palpatine gave Order 66 in Revenge of the Sith and will follow Obi-Wan in the aftermath of that fateful decision. The upcoming Disney+ series will also feature another sizable reprisal in Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. After several delays, filming on Obi-Wan Kenobi is now underway.
On the set of the upcoming Star Wars series, McGregor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss another upcoming series, Netflix’s Halston, but the conversation understandably wandered into the highly-anticipated Disney+ series. Kimmel was particularly curious about Oasis lead singer Noel Gallagher claiming that he gave McGregor his first lightsaber training in 1997. McGregor confirmed the story is true and a lightsaber battle did happen in Gallagher’s garden, but he doesn’t remember any instruction or lessons being given. “It was just more of a battle in the garden,” McGregor says. When asked who won, the Obi-Wan actor replied, “I’d be surprised if either of us could remember that.” Watch the full segment below:
Since the battle occurred over two decades ago following the former Oasis singer’s 30th birthday in 1997, which was just before McGregor started filming The Phantom Menace, it is understandable he does not remember the lightsaber bout. However, it is a bizarre Star Wars-related story, of which there are many.
McGregor revealed a few other interesting Star Wars tidbits in the interview, such as a scene he shot on May the 4th with someone who is “very special” in his life. While the series will feature a few other reprisals in Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse as Owen and Beru Lars, McGregor says he has never been on camera with this person before. The series features new characters played by Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, and O’Shea Jackson Jr, to name a few, although McGregor did not share any more information. This, along with many other Obi-Wan Kenobi-related teases, will fuel rabid speculation in the months leading up to the show’s premiere on Disney+.
