Dr. Edwards said the name “Crew” along with the black and gold colors will still be a part of the team.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Crew SC announced a rebrand is coming for the club.
The team will now be named “Columbus SC.”
However, Dr. Pete Edwards, a co-owner of the club, told 10TV’s Dom Tiberi that the Crew and signature black and gold colors will remain.
In addition to the name change, the club revealed a new logo which shows “Crew” with 96 in the middle. The logo is on a black background with the text in yellow.
Dr. Pete Edwards said the 96 represents the year the Crew was founded.
“We think that it’s a really cool nod to the past but also a neat emblem of where we are going and the brand is evolving and trying to keep up with the city,” Dr. Edwards said.
Dr. Edwards said the leaked logo seen on social media will officially be revealed in the next couple of days with the entire rebrand package.
The logo is shaped like the Ohio flag and has a white “C” in the middle of a black background. The flag-shaped logo has a yellow outline with Columbus on top and SC on the bottom.
Dr. Edwards said the C does stand for Crew.
“We think we’re being forward-looking. We’re trying to lead the soccer world, not follow. So we’re super excited about the opportunity that makes everyone proud to be from Columbus,” Dr. Edwards said.
Dr Edwards said the name “Crew” along with the black and gold colors will still be a part of the team.
When asked about some of the comments disapproving of the new logo and name change, Dr. Edwards said he wants what the fans want and that is consistently winning on the field and in the community.
“We really respect where we’ve come, but we think this is an opportunity to build on that and take us to heights that we can’t even imagine in the future,” Dr. Edwards said.
Dr. Edwards said the black and gold colors are not going anywhere and the club will still identify the club as the Crew.
The Crew changed its logo in 2014 to what it is now with an outer circle with “Columbus” on top and “Crew SC” on the bottom. The inner-circle shows “96” which represents the year the club was founded.
