French game studio Microids has struck a deal to release four new Smurfs games over the next five years – which could make it a major game franchise.
The game publisher Microids revealed in April 2021 that four new Smurfs video game adaptations will be releasing across the next five years – a recipe that may remind many people of the yearly release schedule seen with Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise. Depending on the success of these upcoming Smurfs releases, it’s possible fans could expect video games centered around The Smurfs to become an ongoing series.
The Smurfs – Mission Vileaf is the first of these upcoming titles, with a release date scheduled for October 2021. The game will reportedly be releasing on PC, Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Microids describes the title as a 3D platformer and adventure game, and players will be presented with four different characters to utilize over the course of their quest. The game is being developed by OSome Studio. Currently, little has been revealed about what games can be expected after the release of Mission Vileaf, but according to the publisher the upcoming titles will explore various genres. It’s possible that each one could utilize a different style of gameplay – this contrasts with Assassin’s Creed, which tends to offer familiar playstyle choices to returning fans.

The Smurfs have recently seen a resurgence in media, with their latest movie release being Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2021. The most recent film utilized stylized CGI compared to the most realistic visual direction of the 2011 Smurfs film and its sequel. The screenshots and footage of Mission Vileaf that have been released thus far seem to be aiming for this stylized approach in terms of artistic direction, but it’s unknown whether other games in the upcoming Smurfs game franchise will branch out from this. Either way, with so many titles in the works and such a rapid-fire release schedule, it seems like The Smurfs is aiming to take Ubisoft’s approach to games. So, there’s a chance that both The Smurfs and Assassin’s Creed will soon be releasing new games every year.
What The Smurfs Borrows From Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed
The Assassin’s Creed series has seen twelve mainline games since the series conception in 2007, with a new game or spin-off releasing every one or two years. While each game largely sticks to the same overall style of gameplay – the series is an action-adventure stealth game – the franchise has explored a variety of new locations, features and even platforms over the years. The Smurfs, on the other hand, is aiming to explore a different gameplay style with each release. Both series, however, maintain a fast-paced release schedule.
There’s the possibility that future Smurfs projects could see delays or even cancellations depending on the success of Mission Vileaf, but at the moment it’s too early to determine the future of the franchise either way. It’s also unknown whether the games will tie in to future Smurfs movies or other media. Regardless, fans of the Assassin’s Creed games should be prepared for a new yearly series to start hitting shelves as more Smurfs projects get underway.
