Iran struck at the United States early today firing a series of surface-to-surface missiles at two Iraqui bases housing US troops and warning the United States and its allies in the region not to retaliate. Iran attacked with dozens of ballistic missiles to the US troop as retaliation for the U.S. drone strike in Baghdad that killed Iran’s top general Qasem Soleimani.

The dramatic video purportedly showed the moment the missiles hit what is believed to be the iron al-Assad Air Base and Iraq’s Erbil province. The Pentagon has confirmed that Iran launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles at two targets hosting US military forces in Iraq.

Iranian state TV said the attack was in revenge for the killing of Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force’s head, Qasem Soleimani on January 3, 2019. Iran attacked a few hours after the funeral of Soleimani.

U.S President Donald Trump said in a tweet that an assessment of casualties and damage from the strikes was underway and that he would make a statement on Wednesday morning. Trump who visited the Assad Air Base in December 2018 said “all is well” in a Twitter post.

Jonathan Hoffman, Pentagon spokesperson said “as we evaluate the situation and our response, we will take all necessary measures to protect and defend U.S. personnel, partners, and allies in the region,” as per the Economic Times report.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted about this attack on US troops and said: “Iran took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of UN Charter targeting base from which cowardly armed attack against our citizens & senior officials were launched.” “We do not seek an escalation of the war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression,” he added.

One source said early indications were of no US casualties. Other US officials declined to comment. While Iranian state TV said in a report that around 80 “US terrorists” were killed in the attacks and several military equipments and helicopters were damaged.

India, the US, and some other nations have banned their national airlines from flying over the airspace of Iran, Iraq, the Gulf of Oman, and the Gulf. Another report came a few hours ago that a Ukrainian plane crashed in Tehran, Iran shortly after takeoff due to technical problems killing over 170 passengers on board.

After the killing of Qasem Soleimani the rumors and memes about the “World War 3” spread on Twitter and other social media. Well, the US officers said the attack on Baghdad International Airport was carried out to kill Iran’s top general as they had intelligence information about Soleimani was planning to attack some US regions. But no evidence was provided.
