Issa Rae Wasn’t the First Black Person to Host ‘SNL’ — but Here’s Who Was

Issa Rae hosted an episode of SNL that aired on Oct. 17, 2020, and through her monologue the actress/author/producer made a joke that referenced the NBC present’s lack of range.

“I can not consider I simply walked down the steps — the identical stairs — because the comedy legends like Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler, and Molly Shannon. And my household, all of our inside jokes are from SNL. That is unimaginable,” she started her bit.

Issa continued, “And truly I am so scared proper now; I am scared as hell, I am not going to lie. I’d throw up. However I will maintain it down as a result of I am the primary Black girl to host SNL, y’all.”

After the dwell viewers members clapped heartily for her, she added, “OK wait, that is truly not true. Y’all actually clapped … What if I simply saved mendacity to y’all all evening? Half of y’all would not even discover.”
