The Voice live shows have started. Fans believe Kelly Clarkson’s team should be in the finals, despite the format not allowing for that to happen.
The Voice season 20 kicked off the live shows this week, and fans think that coach Kelly Clarkson’s team should be in the finals. As the live shows began, 17 artists took to the stage to compete for only nine available spots. During the first results show of the season, America voted to advance one artist from each team. Then each coach got to choose one artist to stay in the competition. At the end of the night, four singers performed for the Instant Save, with Clarkson’s Corey Ward receiving that wildcard spot. This means that her team has an extra member heading into the Top 9.
Clarkson has built a solid track record as a coach on The Voice ever since she joined in 2018. She won during the first two years as a coach on The Voice, with season 14’s Brynn Cartelli and season 15’s Chevel Shepherd. After John Legend won in the spring of 2019, Clarkson got back on track, with season 17’s Jake Hoot winning the show. During the six completed seasons she’s been a coach, she has won half of those installments, with Legend, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani taking up the other spots. Of course, over the entire course of the series, Shelton has the best track record, with seven wins. Clarkson and Adam Levine are tied for second.

With an extra artist on her team, one of Clarkson’s artists could end up winning The Voice season 20. Fans have taken to Reddit to share that her team should make it to the finals. They’ve noticed how strong her artists have been this season. However, producers have tried to make it as fair as possible for the celebrity coaches by making sure at least one artist from each team is in the finals, with one team having an extra artist due to the final Instant Save that will take place during next week’s results show. But viewers wish those constraints weren’t in place because, as one fan said, “Some people will go home on Kelly’s team even though they’re better than other people just because a certain number of people from each team get[s] to go through.” Check out some of the fan comments on Reddit below:
The Voice fans make a good point. By constructing the live rounds so that each team has an even number of artists (not counting the extra artist from the Instant Save), it’s clear that producers are trying to keep the coaches happy and engaged with the show. Many viewers will remember Levine’s unhappiness after his remaining artists were eliminated one week before the semifinals in season 16. During the remaining weeks of the competition, fans noticed that he seemed detached from the show. A few days after the finale aired, Levine quit The Voice. Ever since then, producers changed the format so that each coach has at least one artist represented at the finale.
While it’s understandable that the coaches would want their artists in the finale, this format isn’t fair to the artists, especially when some really talented singers will head home as a result. Like the fan on Reddit said, the results should be based on total votes regardless of how many are on each team and without the coaches having the ability to save one of their own artists. And if that means Clarkson has more artists competing on The Voice, then so be it. Talent should reign supreme on a singing competition show. But it’s impossible for that to be the case on The Voice since this particular singing show has always been about the coaches and not the singers.
The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
