Kate Bishop actress Hailee Steinfeld says she has mastered and fallen in love with archery while preparing for her role in the Disney+ Hawkeye show.
Kate Bishop star Hailee Steinfeld says she fell in love with archery while preparing for her role in Disney+’s Hawkeye. Despite his debut as the sixth original Avenger a whole decade earlier, Jeremy Renner’s titular bow-and-arrow wielding superhero Clint Barton has yet to find his footing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For several years, fans wondered if Hawkeye would ever get a chance to shine in his solo project. But it wasn’t until the advent of Disney+ that the opportunity came by for the underused character, as Marvel found the streaming platform to be the perfect avenue to tell the story of the tactile sharpshooter. A Hawkeye TV series was subsequently confirmed to be in development for Phase 4 in 2019. But production did not commence until December 2020, as the progress was previously hindered by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. At the moment, the show is fully on track; it has already finished filming, with plans to bow sometime later this year.

Although the upcoming show puts Renner under a much-deserved spotlight, his character won’t be completely on his own in the series. Of course, several characters from the comics will appear in the show, including Maya Lopez/Echo, Jack Duquesne/Swordsman, and Yelena Belova/Black Widow. But the other lead will only be portrayed by Dickinson actress Hailee Steinfeld, who will star as Kate Bishop, Barton’s protege, and possibly his successor. Steinfeld was a popular choice for Kate even before her casting was announced. So far, there have been a few looks at Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop costume, many of which come from leaked set photos.
While the actress hasn’t gotten much of a chance to show off her skills, Steinfeld has already professed her love for archery, admitting that she has become adept at the sport. In a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via XRealm), Steinfeld opened up about how she prepared for her role as Kate in Hawkeye. She briefly talked about reading the comics to familiarize herself with the history of her character, but primarily, she discussed taking up archery for the show, a sport that she has now perfected and fallen in love with.
As far as a bow and arrow goes, I’m pretty damn good! And I’ll say it’s something that I genuinely, really enjoy. Not something I’ve ever picked up, a bow, before this project. So something I definitely recommend – it’s a sport that anybody can play and start at any point in their life. And it’s truly therapeutic and just amazing. Not something I’d ever see myself doing. But here I am! And I absolutely love it.
Besides archery, Steinfeld will also be involved in several other action-packed sequences in Hawkeye, including an exhilarating car chase. Her character will additionally accompany Barton in his missions against the nefarious Tracksuit Draculas while helping him rescue Lucky, aka Pizza Dog, from their clutches. At the moment, it’s not abundantly clear how Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop arc will play out in the show. But as far as the future of the character is concerned, Steinfeld will reprise her role in multiple MCU properties after Hawkeye, as the actress has signed a multi-project deal with the studios.
With Steinfeld’s confession about her admiration for archery, the anticipation for Hawkeye has only increased. Fans are quite thrilled about catching Steinfeld as Kate Bishop in the series due to the hype created by her bodysuit and signature bow and arrow, which stand accurate to the character’s traditional comic-book look. Apart from that, many are also hoping to see the actress star in a Young Avengers movie, which might be on the horizon given that the MCU is planned through 2027. Now Steinfeld’s comments on archery are bound to give Kate Bishop’s popularity a further boost, as fans are growing curious to watch the star dazzle through the high-octane skirmishes in Hawkeye.
