According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1000s of pounds worth salad products have been recalled citing the possible contamination from E.coli. As confirmed by the department, Missa Bay, LLC, based in New Jersey’s Swedesboro, is now recalling 75000+ pounds of salad-based products that consist of poultry and meat given the fact that the lettuce might have been contaminated with a variant of the E.coli bacterium.
These products were being sold starting October 14th to October 16th in Connecticut, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, South Carolina, as well as Wisconsin. According to the authorities, the Maryland based Department of Health conducted a test on the unopened salad products that contained chicken as well as lettuce. The result for the same was positive as the sample was infected with the bacteria.
As per the CDC, E.coli is known to cause issues such as vomiting and diarrhea. For some, the illness can last longer and turn into severe issues. Infection from E.coli is generally diagnosed via testing of the stool sample. Supportive care along with vigorous rehydration of the body, is the applied treatment, while antibiotic based treatment is mostly avoided in such cases.
In most cases, infected people recover within a week. However, rare cases are also known where the patient develops severe infection along with HUS or Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. HUS can affect people belonging to any age group. However, it is most common among children that are 5 years or below. Older adults & people suffering from weakened immunity issues could also be vulnerable to the same. The symptoms of HUS include easy bruising, decreased output during urination, as well as the pale color of the urine. People that have been experiencing this issue need to immediately get in touch with the medical care professional to avoid any complications.
The year 2019 has been quite a hectic one for the meat suppliers as most of the products that reach in the market are being recalled one after the other due to possible infestation from E.coli. FSIS suggests that consumers who have already purchased such products should refrain from consuming the same and immediately return it to the store they bought it from.
