Focus Features sets a September release date for The Card Counter, the Paul Schrader-directed revenge thriller starring Oscar Isaac.
Focus Features sets a September release date for the new Oscar Isaac movie The Card Counter. Isaac will always be Poe Dameron to Star Wars fans. But the actor of course boasts an impressive resume outside of his contribution to the Star Wars universe, working with a range of acclaimed directors including Alex Garland, The Coen Brothers, Nicolas Winding Refn, Julian Schnabel, J.C. Chandor and Ridley Scott.
Isaac’s newest release indeed sees him adding to that impressive list of filmmaking collaborators. Written and directed by the legendary Paul Schrader, The Card Counter is a revenge thriller starring Isaac as a professional gambler who befriends a troubled younger man, played by Tye Sheridan. Tiffany Haddish and Willem Dafoe round out the movie’s cast. As revealed by Focus Features, The Card Counter is now set to hit North American theaters on Friday, September 10, 2021.
Schrader of course is best known for collaborating with Martin Scorsese on the masterpiece Taxi Driver. Schrader’s last film as a writer-director was First Reformed, which was seen as a return to form, and landed Schrader an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
The synopsis for The Card Counter reads as follows: “Tell (Isaac) just wants to play cards. His spartan existence on the casino trail is shattered when he is approached by Cirk (Sheridan), a vulnerable and angry young man seeking help to execute his plan for revenge on a military colonel (Dafoe). Tell sees a chance at redemption through his relationship with Cirk. But keeping Cirk on the straight-and-narrow proves impossible, dragging Tell back into the darkness of his past.”
