The release of a Microsoft Store page for Psychonauts 2 and new screenshots hints at an upcoming release date for the anticipated sequel.
New screenshots of Psychonauts 2 and the presence of a Microsoft store page seem to be indicating an imminent release date for the highly anticipated sequel from Double Fine Productions. After many years of waiting, fans are now finally getting some in-depth information about the game.
Psychonauts 2 is the direct sequel to the 2005 game that follows the adventures of young Razputin, an in-training Psychonaut and ex-acrobat who escaped from the circus. Psychonauts are spies with special psychic abilities, namely the ability to explore the inner minds of subjects. The sequel was announced following the success of the first game and a crowd raising a fund of over $3.3 million to develop another game. By 2016, Double Fine had managed to raise over $4 million to make Psychonauts 2. Early screenshots of Psychonauts 2 show a more expansive world and more detailed stories. These HD screenshots appear to have been uploaded by the developers following a number of leaks online surrounding Psychonauts 2.

These leaks were found to be images from a back update, but Double Fine took this opportunity to release some official screenshots on the Microsoft Store page in response to fans’ eagerness to learn more about the game. These screenshots can be seen on Idle Sloth‘s Twitter along with more details about the final release. The official Psychonauts 2 screenshots show Raz in a mindscape with large eyeballs, the return of the cooky janitor, what looks to be the circus that Raz ran away from in the first game, and some enemy types that may appear in the game.

While the Microsoft Store page does not contain a release date for the game, it does have some information about the capabilities. According to the store page for Psychonauts 2 the game will be single-player, with an Xbox presence, and be a part of the Xbox clubs. It will be available in 4K Ultra HD and have Xbox Play Anywhere enabled. The game will be fully optimized for the Xbox Series X and Series S, along with PC Game Pad support.
Fans will have to wait a little longer to find out the final release date for the game, beyond just listing 2021 as the release date for Psychonauts 2. However, the fact that the developer is showing official screenshots from the game could mean that a full showing is in the cards. Perhaps when E3 is held next month there will be an update on Psychonauts 2 in the Microsoft presentation, as Double Fine is now owned by Microsoft.
