Rare blue lobster Clawdia to debut at Akron Zoo

Akron Zoo officers say Clawdia the lobster now has extra of a ‘rainbow-colored’ shell after molting final fall.

Months after it was rescued by restaurant employees at a Purple Lobster in Cuyahoga Falls, a uncommon blue lobster is about to make her first public look on the Akron Zoo this weekend on Feb. 13.

Clawdia first arrived on the Akron Zoo final July after the restaurant’s staff realized the rarity of her blue shell and contacted the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch dialog program.

“Blue lobsters are very uncommon, occurring one in each 2 million,” Akron Zoo officers clarify. “The blue coloration of the shell is the results of a genetic anomaly.”

After spending a while getting acclimated to her new residence, zoo officers say Clawdia started the molting course of final fall during which she shed her exoskeleton.

“Molting is a really weak course of for lobsters, and it was particularly weak for Clawdia after her lengthy journey the earlier summer time.”

Clawdia now lives in a habitat throughout the Akron Zoo’s Komodo Kingdom.
