Netflix’s new Chronicles of Narnia reboot is still in the works, but being this early into development means there are still few details about it.
Netflix is developing a new set of shows and films based on C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia series, but what form will this reboot take and when can audiences expect to see it on their Netflix homepage? After Disney’s series of big-budget film adaptations of Narnia slowly lost steam over the course of a decade, Netflix bought the rights to the franchise wholesale. Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia promises to be a new take on the books and is not going to be related to the earlier films in any way.
C.S. Lewis wrote and published The Chronicles of Narnia books in the early to mid-1950s, and they quickly became some of the most popular children’s books of all time, even drawing many comparisons to Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Netflix’s purchase of the rights to the series in 2018 for their own Chronicles of Narnia reboot is the first time that any single company has held the rights to all of the books at once. Netflix won’t have any restrictions on how they choose to adapt The Chronicles of Narnia.

Though Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia was announced in 2018, there still has been very little word on its progress, or if it’s even still happening. This is due to a number of factors. The most prominent of these factors has been the Covid-19 pandemic, which halted numerous Hollywood productions in 2020 and delayed the releases of dozens of different projects that were in development, Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia included. Besides that, other typical factors that cause the development of a project such as this to take time must be taken into account. This includes assembling the right cast and crew and agreeing upon the best creative vision for the franchise.
Are Netflix’s Chronicles Of Narnia Movies & Shows Still Happening?
Netflix has stated that its Chronicles of Narnia reboot is still moving forward. Mark Gordon is the primary producer on the project and has stated that there is potential to adapt the books into both a television series and potentially multiple feature films for the streaming service. In 2019 he hired Coco‘s co-writer Matthew Aldrich to be Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia‘s creative architect. There have been no signs from Netflix to indicate that any of its Chronicles of Narnia plans from before the pandemic have been changed or canceled in any way.
Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia Release Dates
Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia is still in the early stages of development, and thus no solid release dates are known for any projects related to it. It can be expected that Netflix may try to begin serious work on its Chronicles of Narnia reboot in late 2021, which would mean a likely release date of either late 2022 or sometime in 2023.
Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia Story Details
Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia is going to be a total reboot of the series, and will not be continuing from where the earlier films had left off. While there were plans for the film series to adapt The Silver Chair, it had lost most of its popularity by then and ended with Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The question then is how will Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia choose to adapt the books? There is some dispute as to which order the books should be read in, by publication date or by chronology. Netflix might do what the films had done and start with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the first book published and by far the most well-known of the whole series. Otherwise, if they want to focus on a larger connected universe they might instead first adapt The Magician’s Nephew, the second-to-last book published but the one set earliest chronologically.
