Release, Story, Will It Happen?

Both films in the Mamma Mia! franchise were blockbuster successes, and Mamma Mia! 3 could be the same. Here’s what we know about a third movie.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again premiered as a long-awaited sequel to the first film, and it seems like Mamma Mia! 3 could be a possibility. Christine Baranski, who plays Tanya in the movies, recently gave some hope to viewers eager for another addition to the popular movie musical series. In addition, producer Judy Craymer has also spoken about the potential for Mamma Mia! 3.

The third installment in the franchise would come after Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) grapples with the death of Donna (Meryl Streep), the hotel’s future, and her own growing family in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. The storyline alternates between Sophie’s struggles in the present day and Donna’s romantic adventures and heartbreak in the past, with several scenes mirroring each other. By the end of the movie, Sophie feels at peace when she becomes pregnant and can relate to Donna’s motherhood journey. Like the original, the sequel is set to some of ABBA’s hit pop songs.

Even though the only discussions surrounding a third movie have consisted of rumors, recent talk from Baranski and others who are part of the series implies that something is in the works. There’s still plenty of ABBA music left for Mamma Mia! 3. There’s also arguably room for another successful installment in the franchise after the sequel did so well.

Is Mamma Mia 3 Going To Happen?

Mamma Mia! 3 isn’t confirmed, but some of the cast and crew from the previous movies have hinted that it’s a possibility. Craymer, one of the producers behind both films and the original stage musical, explained (via Daily Mail) that the franchise was “meant to be a trilogy” and that the team at Universal would surely approve. She also hinted at the possibility of new ABBA songs for Mamma Mia! 3‘s soundtrack. Baranski seemed on board with the idea as well, relaying (via TODAY Show) that her fellow cast members would gladly sign on for another film since they all loved making the others. It looks like it’s not a question of if the movie will happen, but when.

When Mamma Mia 3 Could Release

Since there’s been no confirmation and Mamma Mia! 3 isn’t filming yet, a specific release date is nearly impossible to pinpoint. Craymer had also said that planning for the film would have been underway in 2020, but the pandemic put things on pause. Because the other two films had July release dates, perhaps the third movie could release next summer if things could start moving along later this year. However, summer 2023 might be more likely since it would allow for more time and mark five years since the second movie.

What Mamma Mia 3’s Story Could Be About

Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia

In Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Sophie reveals that she is pregnant and later presents her newborn son to be christened at the end of the movie. This leaves the door open for a new storyline revolving around her son without the risk of overusing the mother-daughter bond for another film. Since Meryl Streep is known for refusing sequels, it seems rather unlikely for her storyline to continue after she managed to make a rare appearance during the christening and in the post-credits scene. Yet, the sequel did create some unanswered questions and apparent plot holes – one of them being what happened during Sam and Donna’s married years, as well as why young Harry disappeared after missing one ferry to Kalokairi. Whether Mamma Mia! 3 explores any of these details or opts for something different, fans surely hope a third film won’t be slipping through their fingers.
