Sandy Cheeks is getting her own movie, and it can solve some of the mysteries SpongeBob SquarePants has left behind. Let’s take a look.
Sandy Cheeks is the first character from SpongeBob SquarePants to get her own movie, and through it, the team behind the TV show can solve some big mysteries. SpongeBob SquarePants has become a favorite among kids and adults and has been unstoppable since its debut on Nickelodeon in 1999. With over ten seasons and counting, three movies, and more projects lined up for the near future, SpongeBob SquarePants has become one of the longest-running animated shows as well as the most successful Nicktoon to date.
SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily adventures of the title character and his closest friends (and a couple of enemies as well, most notably Plankton) in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob is often accompanied by his best friends Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, his neighbor and coworker Squidward Tentacles, and his boss Mr. Krabs, and they have all been by his side on his biggest adventures, such as his movies and the spinoff prequel series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, but none of them have had a big solo adventure… until now.

In May 2021, it was announced that Sandy Cheeks is getting her own movie, which following the line of the SpongeBob SquarePants movies, will be an animation/live-action hybrid. SpongeBob SquarePants has been around for so long it’s full of inconsistencies and plot holes, and some of those include Sandy. The series established that she and SpongeBob met when he found her battling a clam, but Kamp Koral showed they met at summer camp when they were kids. There’s also a lot of mystery around the real reason why Sandy left Texas for Bikini Bottom, and her family hasn’t been formally introduced, though it’s known that she has a twin brother. By taking Sandy and the audience to Texas, the Sandy Cheeks movie can explain why she really moved to Bikini Bottom, what she did before that big change, introduce her family, and show a bit of her backstory now that all the attention is on her.
As it’s unknown if SpongeBob (or other characters from the show) will appear and if so how relevant he will be to the story, the movie may or may not also answer the big question of how he and Sandy actually met, as Kamp Koral only added more confusion to Sandy’s backstory. If the Sandy Cheeks movie is a hit, this could be the beginning of spinoff movies for the rest of the main characters from SpongeBob SquarePants – or, at least, for those who aren’t getting their own spinoff series, as Patrick is c
