Sonic 2 Synopsis Confirms Kunckles Working With Robotnik & Chaos Emerald

The official synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 leaks confirming Knuckles will be working with Dr. Robotnik to search for the Chaos Emerald.

The official synopsis for the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been revealed, confirming the arrival of the Chaos Emerald and Knuckles the Echidna and his partnership with Dr. Robotnik, aka Dr. Eggman. The film series is based on SEGA’s video game franchise of the same name that began with the eponymous 1991 title. The film sequel will see the returns of Ben Schwartz as the titular hero alongside Jim Carrey as Robotnik, James Marsden, and Tika Sumpter.

After over 20 years of attempting to get an adaptation of the game series off the ground, Paramount Pictures began fast-tracking the film with Jeff Fowler set to make his directorial debut on the film while Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel scripted, all of whom were attached when it was first set at Sony. After a near-disastrous first marketing campaign revealing a criticized redesign for the character, the film was delayed and $5 million was spent to bring the character closer to his game design. Sonic the Hedgehog hit theaters in February 2020 to generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike and was a box office hit, grossing nearly $320 million against its $90 million budget.

The U.S. Copyright Office website (per Rocks the Squirrel on Twitter) has unveiled the official synopsis for the video game adaptation sequel confirming that the titular hedgehog will have to face off against his nemesis and his enemy-turned-friend. The plot also confirms that fellow Sonic sidekick Tails will return after his initial tease in the first film’s mid-credits sequence. The full synopsis reads as follows:

After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Being directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Where the first film took a looser approach to the video game franchise by creating its own story, fans should be excited to hear of the sequel’s return to the source material for its story. While the arrival of Tails in the first film definitely pointed towards such a thing, the confirmation that Eggman and Knuckles will be working together in the search for the Chaos Emerald is a direct pull from Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s story where the echidna was tricked by the evil scientist into believing Sonic to be the villain. It may still be a mystery as to how Knuckles and Eggman meet and decide to partner up, but with the same question being posed about Tails’ arrival on Earth, the sequel will be sure to find a way to explain this plot point.

Video game adaptations are one of the toughest for studios to get right, but the first Sonic was able to pull it off without directly adapting any one source material’s story. With both Knuckles and Tails arriving in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with the mysterious Chaos Emerald at the heart of the story, fans of the games should have a lot to look forward to. Given filming has already wrapped on the sequel, audiences should keep their fingers crossed that better looks at the characters will come soon.
