Star Wars Just Flipped Anakin’s Hated Sand Moment

In Star Wars: The Bad Batch, young Omega visits a new world and her excitement is in direct contrast to how Anakin Skywalker felt about sand.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch just created a fun reversal of Anakin Skywalker’s hated sand moment from Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. In the second episode of the Skywalker saga, Anakin is the Jedi apprentice of Obi-Wan Kenobi, charged with protecting Senator Padmé Amidala on her homeworld of Naboo, where Padmé’s romance with Anakin begins. However, some of their dialogue is infamously cheesy, including an awkward scene where Anakin reveals that he hates sand. Funny enough, The Bad Batch features a scene in its second episode of the animated series, seeing the young girl Omega finding it to be absolutely amazing.

Anakin Skywalker’s dislike of sand stems from his childhood, as he was kept as a slave with his mother on the desert world of Tatooine. According to Anakin, “it’s coarse, rough and irritating…and it gets everywhere.” Clearly, he’s not a fan, but his attempt to utilize those negative feelings into an odd pickup line about Naboo and Padmé being soft and smooth is one most fans agree is pretty cringeworthy. However, it somehow worked and Anakin and Padmé formed a relationship that led to their marriage.

Putting the awkwardness of the scene from Attack of the Clones aside, an interesting reversal is featured in The Bad Batch, episode 2, “Cut and Run.” At the beginning of the episode, Clone Force 99 is evading the Empire, having just escaped the clone facilities on the water world of Kamino. They also brought the young female clone named Omega with them, as she herself is enhanced in some way like them. Landing on the planet Saleucami to meet with an old contact Cut Lawquane, this new world was the first Omega had ever been on. As result, this was also her first contact with vegetation and land. As such, Omega took a few moments to marvel at the sandy dirt at her feet, grabbing a handful and finding it to be absolutely amazing, a cheeky reversal of Anakin’s feelings. It’s not just poking fun at Anakin’s moment, however – it also holds some significance.

Omega’s fascination with the ground is a great developmental moment for her character, as it perfectly shows how removed she’s been from the rest of the galaxy thus far in her life. Her literal first steps have taken her by surprise, and it’s clear that she’s venturing into a far greater and grander universe than she was expecting by agreeing to join the Bad Batch. Likewise, Anakin Skywalker’s journey began in a very similar way, also being a gifted child who felt equally trapped on his homeworld of Tatooine, until Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn came to change the course of his life (and the galaxy) forever.

Hopefully, Omega’s journey won’t continue to take the same steps as Anakin did, as his path inevitably went down the darker road that turned Jedi Anakin Skywalker into Sith Lord Darth Vader. Regardless, it’s interesting to see how their origins are mirrored, and how their experiences on their different homeworlds informed the individual outlooks of Anakin and Omega. While it might not be the most major reveal in all of Star Wars, there is enough significance that it’s worth pointing out as a fun reversal of a past moment featured in the new Star Wars: The Bad Batch series on Disney Plus.
