Wellington police preparing security for Donald Trump rally

Wellington prioritizing security ahead of former President Donald Trump

Trump will hold a ‘Save America’ rally at the Lorain County Fairgrounds on Saturday night.

WELLINGTON, Ohio — Between 15,000 and 20,000 people are expected to be in Wellington on Saturday evening as former President Donald Trump takes the stage for a campaign-style rally at the Lorain County Fairgrounds.

And while there won’t be that many members of law enforcement on hand, Wellington Police Chief Tim Barfield says his department will be ready.

“We’re preparing to have a really good event, but we are also preparing in case things go a little south,” Barfield told 3News on Thursday. “Everyone we have will be working.”

Barfield says the village has reached out to outside agencies for law enforcement assistance on Saturday. The Secret Service will be coordinating security.

“Our focus is on securing the town and putting our best foot forward to ensure the event goes off without a hitch,” Wellington Mayor Hans Schneider told 3News. “If something develops we want to and I believe we will be prepared for it.”

Trump’s appearance in Wellington on Saturday will be his first rally since leaving office in January. Some of his most devoted supporters have already made their way to the Lorain County Fairgrounds to get the best seats in the house.

Barfield believes that the visit by the former president is good for the village in southern Lorain County.

“Wellington is a nice community that has found a way to have people with varying opinions find a way to work together. This (rally) is good for Wellington. Anything that draws Wellington in a good light is a good thing. We just want to make sure that everyone has an enjoyable time, we get though this, and look good when its done,” he said.
